Build Your Credit History
Keeping and maintaining a good credit history is hard these days, as there are so many factors that can negatively impact your credit rating. Keeping a good credit score is easier than building a bad one back up, however, so you should do what you can to keep your score as good as you can. If you have bad credit already, it is going to take you quite a long time to rebuild your ratings.
The first step to building your credit history is to understand what your credit picture looks like. You may know of a few things that are wrong, but you will not know the full extent of your history until you get a copy of your credit report. You can get your report from one of the three big reporting services once a year for no charge.
Once you see your current credit score, you can then start working on a plan to build your history back up. You may find some small notices on your report that you can fix right away. There may be an account that you paid off years ago, but it still shows up on your report as if you still owe money on it. You can contact the company and prove that you have paid the account off. Once they verify it, they will let the credit reporting agency know so that it will be taken off your report. Also check over your report for listings that are not yours. This happens more often than one might think. You can just dispute these with the credit agencies to get them taken off of your report.
If your credit report is really bad, you may have to work with a company that can help you slowly build it back up or that can help you get rid of some of the mistakes listed in it. Keep working at it and you'll improve your history. And then be careful so that you can keep your new good credit rating.
